Following is a list of the prophets and messengers, arranged chronologically, so that one may notice who among the prophets and messengers inherited whom: No messenger but inherited the one before him; one may recite in this connection what Zakaria prayed for, as mentioned in the Mushaf: “Now I fear what my relatives and colleagues will do after me: but my wife is barren: so give me an heir as from Yourself – one that will truly inherit me, and inherit the posterity of Jacob; and make him, O my Lord! one with whom You are well-pleased,” (19:5-6).
One finds this in the words of the Almighty: “Have We not established for them a secure sanctuary, to which are brought as tribute fruits of all kinds – a provision from Ourselves? But most of them do not understand,” (28:57).
This reminds one of what Jesus Christ had said: “he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you,” John, 16:15: in this he is referring to the Glorious Mushaf. From this, I realized it was a basic task to establish the chronology of the prophets and messengers. Here is then the list:
1. Noah, peace be upon him
The first messenger. It is true that Luqman (see Sura 31) was mentioned before him; but we know nothing about Luqman more that he was given wisdom. We have no mention of any prophets or messengers prior to Noah – hence we take him to be the first messenger. Noah was mentioned in 28 suras; his utterances in nine suras: in three of these locations, Noah was supplicating to his Lord, and in six more we find other utterances by him. Here is a list of those last suras:
Sura 7, Sura 10, Sura 11, Sura 23, Sura 26, Sura 71.
2. Hud, peace be upon him
He was sent to the people of ‘Ad; he inherited Noah, as is supported by the Lord’s saying in the Mushaf: “Do you wonder that there has come to you a message from your Lord through a man of your own people, to warn you? Call in remembrance that He made you inheritors after the people of Noah, and gave you a stature tall among the nations. Call in remembrance the benefits you have received from Allah: that so you may prosper,” (7:69).
His utterances occur in three suras, namely:
Sura 7, Sura 11, Sura 26.
3. Saleh, peace be upon him
He was sent to the people of Thamud, and was an inheritor of Hud: this is supported by the verses from the Mushaf: “To the Thamud people We sent Saleh, one of their own brethren: He said: ‘O my people! Worship Allah, you have no other god but Him. Now has come to you a clear sign from your Lord! this she-camel is a Sign to you: so leave her to graze in Allah’s earth, and let her come to no harm, or you shall be seized with a grievous punishment. And remember how He made you inheritors after the ‘Ad people and gave you habitations in the land: you build for homes in the mountains; so bring to remembrance the benefits you have received from Allah, and refrain from evil and mischief on the earth,’” (7:73-74).
Salah’s utterances occur in six suras, namely:
Sura 7, Sura 11, Sura 14, Sura 26, Sura 27, Sura 54.
4. Idris, peace be upon him
We really know so little about this prophet: he was mentioned only twice in the Mushaf, once in Sura 21: “And remember Ismail, Idris, and Zul-kifl, all men of constancy and patience; We admitted them to Our Mercy: for they were of the righteous ones,” (21: 85-86), and another time in Sura 19:
“Also mention in the Book the case of Idris: he was a man of truth and sincerity, and a prophet; and We raised him to a lofty station. Those were some of the prophets on whom Allah bestowed His Grace – of the posterity of Adam, and of those whom We carried in the Ark with Noah, and of the posterity of Abraham and Israel – of those whom We guided and chose,” (56-58).
5. Ibrahim, or Abraham, peace be upon him

In this is a Sign for you if you indeed have faith,” (2:248).

He inherited the Mushaf from Christ, peace be upon him, as evidenced by his receiving it as revelation. It is he who left for humankind the Mushaf as we find it until now.
We shall, in the current chapter, look into each sura of the Glorious Mushaf, to check:
1. Its designation, and the evidence from the Mushaf itself that the name used is actually the sura’s itself.
2. To whom the sura under discussion was revealed, seeking evidence from the Glorious Mushaf itself. In some cases, we look for additional proofs from other sources, just as the utterances of Jesus Christ, or Muhammad, peace be upon both of them.
3. Who is addressed in the sura (among the prophets and messengers).
4. What is the theme of the sura, or what are its main topics?
